Swillington Primary School Art intent statement

At Swillington Primary School, our mission is to provide a transformative cradle to career education that allows our children to enjoy lives of choice and opportunity.

At Swillington, we create artists by fostering a love and enjoyment of art. We provide high quality art lessons which engage, inspire and challenge all of our pupils.

At Swillington Primary School, we have developed our creative curriculum to an Arts mark gold standard and believe this has enabled us to provide virtuous opportunities for our children to express themselves imaginatively and creatively within all areas of the arts.

Our lessons are designed to incorporate a range of teaching and learning styles which equip pupils with the knowledge and skills they require so that they can experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Art is delivered in a sequence of lessons where it is used to support learning of our history and geography topics so that our children are able to progress their learning and make purposeful links and associations with the wider world.

During the process, we encourage pupils to use the correct vocabulary when evaluating and describing the key elements of art so that they are able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art. This is so that children understand how it reflects and shapes the history, culture and wealth of our nation and become tolerant of others.

Aims: The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences;
become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques;
evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design;
know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

In the EYFS (Expressive Arts and Design), children sing songs, make music and dance and experiment with ways of changing them. They safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.

EYFS

Children show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements. They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space. They handle equipment and tools effectively, including pencils for writing. (Physical development)

Children sing songs, make music and dance, and experiment with ways of changing them. They safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. (Expressive Arts and Design)

Children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role play and stories. (Expressive Arts and Design)

Key stage 1

Pupils should be taught:

to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture line, shape, form and space.
about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own works.

Key stage 2

Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Pupils should be taught:

to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.
to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay.
about great artists, architects and designers in history.
